Dear All Hallows Eve,

This is Halloween.
This is Halloween.
HALLOWEEN HALLOWEEN!
Halloween!

I think we make some pretty good monsters. What about you? Check out some more ghouls here. Happy haunting!

Dear Costumes,

10.30.2012

Today I am taking you to Ghosts of Halloweens past. Because I love dressing up. And there are so many more things I could show you. But I narrowed it down. So now if you change your mind LAST minute and want to dress up. You can. I am still deciding on tomorrow's ensemble.

Crowns. Anyone can be a princess.

Ears and a tail of any sort. This year I was trying to be a wolf. No one got it.
Anything Harry Potter. I usually go for Professor Trelawney. Big glasses, a crystal ball, and I get to act crazy. It is a win, win, WIN.
Anything you can find in your closet to look like you are from a different century or state of mind.
 Superwoman. Because I love spandex.
Ballerina. Which comes alive or dead depending on my mood.
And my BEST costume ever...
DRUM ROLL PLEASE!!!
Michael Jackson. May he rest in peace.

Are you going to be dressing up?
What are you being?
What should I be, any ideas?

Love,
Deidre

Dear Wanting and Needing,

The other day I was chatting with my friend and she showed me a blog post by someone we knew. We chuckled about it for a little and then our conversation went a little like this...

Me: I dont like that their life appears so perfectHer: well that's usually how blogs portray life in general
peeps don't blog about the bad stuff
 Me: Yeah
  I guess so
Well... I don't guess so. I know so. And it got me to thinking. I am definitely guilty of that. I post a lot of funny things about my life. I post a lot of good things. I definitely only post my good outfits because I do not get ready on a regular basis like one might think. I do like to laugh and I do like to have a good time. But just like everyone else I have my ups and my downs. And I want people, whoever you are, to know who I really am. So while I do love my life. And I do love Adam. And I do love making funny faces, wrestling, cracking jokes, and smiling... I want you to know all sides of me. And I want you to know who I really am. So here I am, today, to start talking about the bad parts too. Starting with the most recent bad part. I am really lucky to have a nice job. I will be the first to admit I am blessed there, but at the same time... it isn't a field I want to be in forever. It has nothing to do with my degree. I want a job that showcases everything I studied and interned in for my four years at college. And I was finally in a place to get that job... three different times. I had gone through all of the rounds, I was in the top two or three selections, only to come out... not on top. Well, recently I finished up the process for a seemingly perfect job. Adam came home from baseball to see me pouting, "What's wrong Deidre?" I felt stupid... I had gotten my hopes up. It was a job I really wanted. And we had both prayed for it a lot. Adam prayed that the employers would see my benefit and I prayed that I would be happy with whatever the outcome and know that it was right.. neither of us got what we prayed for. "I didn't get the job Adam..." I started crying as I thought about what we had both been asking for over the last few weeks and how we didn't get what we wanted. Well, we both did... but not in the way we wanted or not right away. As for Adam's prayer, the employers saw my benefit and really liked me, they just liked someone else better. As for my prayer, it took my a little while to remember what I prayed for. Not that I would get the job, but that I would know that the outcome was right. And after a lot of tears and pouting. I am remembering what I asked Heavenly Father for. And I am remembering that I asked him to let me have the job if that is what was right for me. And so clearly, it wasn't...

That is one thing I need to work on. And it one thing I need to remember in the great times and the not so great times. He knows what is best and He will give me what is best when I need it. He knows what I need while I merely know what I want.

Love,
Deidre

Dear Headache Help,

10.29.2012

I used to never get headaches. And when I did it was rare and I didn't take any medicine. Partly because my headaches were never bad enough and partly because I didn't want to get that in my body unless I one hundred percent needed it. Well... Over the last year headaches have been happening a lot more. At first it was due to dehydration. Changing from walking around and classes with a water bottle to a desk job made me forget the importance of some H20. But then I I got a sinus infection, combined with allergies, and whatever other random things you can think of. Water always calms them slightly, but hasn't been curing them lately. I put out a call on FB and got some good (and some not so good) responses. A lot of them are caffiene related, but there are some foods to eat, some different techniques to clear your sinuses, and some oils to try. One of my friends thought it deserved to be shared, and I agree. So I decided I would share them with you! Hopefully this helps you with some of your headache needs.

Beyond the oils, the naps, the adjustments, and all of Facebook weighing in I also got a few private messages, texts, and tweets. Here are a few more recommendations:
  • Eat an apple or some almonds
  • Take some claritan
  • A sinus rinse, my family prefers Neil-Med
  • Use an ice pack on your forehead, temples, or the back of your neck
  • Take a warm bath or shower
  • Take a walk
  • Talk to the doctor about birth control dosage
  • Eat something spicy
  • (added 1.16.13) Powerade Zero- zero because I prefer to eat my calories: It replaces electrolytes and has been a huge help for my headaches the last month
So there you have it. Next time you have a headache here are some tips!

Love,
Deidre

Dear Wedding,

10.27.2012

Remember the other night when I couldn't sleep? Well besides blogging I took a lot of time to look through our 1000+ wedding photos to put together a little album... and I couldn't help but share them with you. Looking through them reminded me how fabulous that day was. The day was spent with the people we love just laughing and smiling all day! Plus, being at the beautiful Salt Lake temple didn't hurt. So here I am to share some of the ones that made me smile... only a few.. or a dozen.

Adam is a huge fan of the one hand dip. During engagements our photographer asked us to do a dip and... I will be honest. It was a struggle. But after a few short months we have mastered both the one and two hand dips. Altough, Adam picks one hand dip always. He thinks it is more exciting. And it has produced a few of my favorite photos from the weddding celebrations!

Here are a few photos of friends and the bridal party. The boys went for tough, the group went for out of control (aren't my friends TALENTED in pulling faces?), and the girls went for Spice Girls... per my request.

People were cheering. So Adam kissed me and gave a huge thumbs up. I couldn't help but crack up.

We can only be serious for a few minutes...
Clearly....
Adam played with my veil for like 5 minutes, we have it on video.

Coming out of the temple. I was running around hugging EVERYONE and Adam was just showing off his ring. We could do a series of Adam showing his ring. I think we have like 20 pictures of it. He was impressed with my choice.

And this one was submitted after... We are so glad Adam's brother could fly in from Hawaii for the wedding.

I want to keep sharing them with you... but I also don't want you to get annoyed and stop reading my blog. So I will stop there for now. And then some might come later. Because I still have photos to filter through. And until then, enjoy these little gems. Maybe they will entertain you when you can't fall asleep!

Love,
Deidre

Dear Weekenders,

10.26.2012

Last weekend didn't go quite as planned. Actually... it didn't go at all as planned. We had high hopes for a corn maze, a trip to Salt Lake, and some pumpkin decorating. But instead we went to In n Out, a dollar movie, and didnt leave the house once on Saturday. Pretty promising. The only thing that did happen was hanging out with Drew and Madison.

This weekend, there is NO backing out of plans. My mom got in last night and I am spending the weekend with her at the Time Out for Women conference. My brother and I got her tickets for her birthday back in July, so this has been in the works forever. It will be fun to spend the weekend with my mom. And I think my mom is planning on seeing all her grandchildren while she is here, so that is always exciting for her. Besides that, Adam will be having a man date with Drew because Madison's mom and sisters are in town and will need a girls night. And then tomorrow we will hopefully go buy a vacuum and some pans... I know, we have been married for two months and we still don't have those pretty important items. We are just a teeny tiny bit behind. Oops! So enjoy your weekend. And enjoy this song on repeat. I am LOVING the new T Swift Album. She just gets me.

What are your plans for the weekend?

Dear Corn Chowder,

10.25.2012

Like I have said before. It is soup season. Here is the latest installment from the Skinnys' home.
CornChowder

Creamy Corn Chowder
Serves 6-8

2 Tbsp. butter
1/4 c. all-purpose flour
1 c. water
2 1/2 c. milk
2 regular-sized chicken bouillon cubes or 2 tsp. chicken broth
1/2 lb. bacon (optional)
1 small onion, minced
2 potatoes, diced into small cubes
2-3 cloves garlic, minced
1 can corn, drained or about 1 1/2 C frozen fresh corn
Salt and pepper to taste
A few dashes of hot sauce or cayenne pepper

Fry bacon until crisp.
In the meantime, melt butter over low heat in a soup pot.
When melted, add flour to make a roux and whisk until it comes together in a little ball.
Add water and whisk until completely combined and there are no lumps.
Add milk and chicken base or bouillon and bring to a simmer.
Add potatoes, onions, and garlic, and simmer (but don’t boil!), stirring very frequently, for about 20 minutes or until potatoes are tender.
Add crumbled bacon and corn and heat through.
Add a few drops of hot sauce and then salt to taste.
Ladle into bowls.
Garnish with extra bacon and/or cheese if you want.

And when I say "if you want" I mean... you should do it. It is more delicious than you would believe with those extra toppings. Now go, soup it up!

Love,
Deidre

Dear Birthday Redo,

10.24.2012

I haven't told you about this day yet. Because I was planning on doing it last week. But then Adam wanted to give his rebuttal to the 10 things we have learned since we have been wed. Which meant this post got pushed off. But now it is time to share the birthday redo with you all. Starting with the photos from the day.

Now are you wondering what we did? Clearly, you are.

  • We woke up in the morning, sort of early, because Adam had baseball practice due to rain on Friday.
  • Baseball started at 10, but he always likes to go to the field early. So at 8:15 he said he was heading out the door to practice... to which I said, "Already!? Can't you just cuddle a little bit longer!?" And he said. "I really need to go to practice early..." And so I whined, "Practice isn't for OVER an hour... please?!" And he said, "Sorry. I just have to do really good today." I frowned and said, "Alright... I will see you later. Just bring me my computer so I can watch Gossip Girl." He got me my computer and headed out the door. 15 minutes later I hear the door open and Adam says, "Hey, Sneak! I have something for you in the kitchen!" I walked out and he said, "It isn't a birthday redo without Kneaders french toast!" YUM! I was so happy. We ate. He left for practice. For reals this time.
  • I watched Gossip Girl for about two hours, got ready, and went to meet him at the field so we could walk over to the football game together.
  • Went to BYU homecoming game. Started out great. Ended not so great. Moving on.
  • Left the game and went home to relax.
  • Relaxed while Adam did his homework and I watched more Gossip Girl... I have a serious problem.
  • Got ready for the night.
  • Went to return birthday sneakers and replace with a birthday sweater.
  • Went to Chili's. 2 for $20.
  • Adam took me home and said, "I will be back soon, you go relax."
  • I went into the house and watched Gossip Girl.... like I said, serious problem.
  • Adam texts me, "Can you put the tape in the kitchen and go back into the bedroom and shut the door? Thanks."
  • He comes home, peaks in the bedroom door to say I love you and to remind me to STAY PUT!
  • After about 30 minutes and a lot of noises in the kitchen Adam comes back to the room and says, "Close your eyes for a surprise!" And walks me to the living room and sits me on the couch. I hear a few matches and then he says, "Okay! Open!"
  • I open my eyes to streamers, flowers, a cake with candles, and a birthday song. With cake and kisses to follow!
Best birthday redo in the land. Actually. My first birthday was really great, but if Adam felt bad at all about having me watch baseball all day and then having him disappear to priesthood at night, no need to worry anymore. I am lucky.

Love,
Deidre

Dear Insomnia,

10.23.2012

You know those days when you can't sleep? Well normally I remedy that with a show and I am sleeping in a few minutes. Now I am married so I have to be quiet quiet like a mouse since Adam has weights at 7:30 AM... so what do I do? Make a Facebook album with about one tenth of our wedding photos and write a blog post.

Sweater: Forever 21 - recent | Grey Longsleeve: ModBod | Mint Skinny Jeans: SexyModest Boutique | Shoes: Macys

A fashion blog post to be exact... I bought that sweater because I felt like I should be in a posh ski lodge... Sleep come soon please?!

Dear Easy Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Cupcakes,

10.22.2012

That is the longest title for any treat. From here forward I am not calling these treats Easy Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Cupcakes. I am calling them EPCC [Epic] Cupcakes. And let me tell you this. They are epic and easy. A few ingredients and 2 dozen delicious cupcakes will follow. And at the risk of making your grossed out because everyone hates this word, they are very moist even though it comes from a box. And I only feel the need to mention that because three people said that. First... you get to see a few nice photos of my making these treats because Adam loves to use the fancy camera.

Can't you tell how HAPPY I am to have these delicious goodies? They really were so good.

Ingredients
1 package spice cake mix
1 15 oz.can of pumpkin (I prefer Libby's)
3 large eggs
1/3 cup vegetable oil
1/3 cup water
1 container (16 oz.) prepared cream cheese or vanilla frosting

Directions
PREHEAT oven to 350° F. Paper-line or grease 24 muffin cups.
BLEND cake mix, pumpkin, eggs, oil and water in large mixer bowl until moistened. Beat on medium speed for 2 minutes. Pour batter into prepared muffin cups, filling 3/4 full.
BAKE for 18 to 23 minutes or until wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean.
Cool in pans on wire racks for 10 minutes; remove to wire racks to cool completely.
Spread cupcakes with frosting. I empty the frosting container into a bowl and whip it up. It isn't as dense and seems to go a little further.
Decorate with assorted sprinkles, if desired.

See? They look good. Right? And they were INCREDIBLY easy to make. And even better tasting. The party was at 7:30 and I baked them all starting at 6:30. I may or may not have put the cupcakes in the freezer right when they came out of the oven so I would have time to frost them... but either way. 2 dozen cupcakes prepared and ready to eat in an hour. That is what I like to call impressive. Also. I am slightly mad at my friends because they didn't take home the leftovers per my request... so I spent the next week eating cupcakes. I guess I am just putting on my winter coat a little early this year.

Deidre

Dear Weekenders,

The weekend is FINALLY here!!! And for all of us without Fall break, the weekend is the best time. So let's get to it weekenders!

Celebrate in everyone's weekend plans!

Remember how I mentioned a birthday redo? Well Adam outdid himself! This was the end of our evening. He sent me to our room while he "set up"... And then I came out to streamers, flowers, a cake with candles, and a little song. More on that later... but the birthday redo and my sweet husband was the highlight of last weekend for sure!

This weekend... that is all I can say about this weekend. We have a lot of things we want to do... but who knows what will actually happen. With no baseball or home football games the world is our oyster! Our plans are as follows...
  • Cornbelly's Corn Maze with The Dennis (the same Drew and Madison that we spend about 50% of every single weekend with) and Brugmans.. or as we like to call them, our favorite baseball couples.
  • Saturday will start with a bountiful basket! Which we haven't ordered for two weeks so we are really excited for fresh fruits and vegetables.
  • We will probably take a few minutes to watch the BYU vs Notre Dame game... until we are so sad that we are losing that we go take a nap.
  • Plans to head up to the big city of Salt Lake for a little shopping and maybe I can trick Skinny into taking me to the Thriller show.
  • And then last of all... Adam things we are going to a haunted house. And I think we are doing crafts or making a music video or taking fall photos. I need a little Halloween festivity since I left all my decorations in Idaho!
Keep this little diddy on replay. The radios here have been playing it again and now I cannot get it off my mind to save my life. It is the official weekend song.

The 10 Things You Don't Hear About Marriage || His Side

10.18.2012

I do agree that marriage is the best thing ever. It is also a change that requires getting used to. I feel that the previous 10 points were lacking details and clarity. SO, I decided to make my own points of marriage.

Serious faces are REALLY hard for us to make...

  1. Waking up seems to be easier for one person in the relationship. And more often than not, someone will say, "Turn off the lights. I'm sleeping." Someone has to be a morning person and someone has to be nominated the first day of marriage... otherwise no one will get out of bed.
  2. Time passes faster for men rather than women. When he says that he will clean up, other pressing issues such as checking MLB.com or watching the political debate seem to, who knows how, take priority. I don't know how that happens. By the time we check again, its already time for bed! Wow time passes fast!
  3. It is a lot easier to just say you like every outfit that someone is wearing. It saves time. And it keeps the bedroom more clean.
  4. The oven can be used as a perfect place for storage. With a lack of counter space, the oven becomes the next best place to store a recently made cake. Its becomes the worst storage place when the other person in the house doesn't realize that a cake is in the oven, and turns it on to preheat for dinner.
  5. Cleaning is taught differently at every house. Some people like to use dishwashers and some people prefer to wash everything by hand. And sometimes the dishwasher users like to say, "The dishwasher has HEAT and sanitizes better..."
  6. Another dishwasher point. Not everyone loads the dishwasher the same way. The bowls, cups, and plastics don't always have to be on the top rack.
  7. Just because you love and support each other doesn't mean you always listen to the other person... "Stop eating that caramel corn! It is almost dinner..." and then five seconds later you will hear the rustling of the caramel corn bag.
  8. Sharing a mirror is more difficult than you would think.
  9. "Treat" is a meal that occurs every night an hour before bed. It includes either cake, oreos and milk, or cupcakes.
  10. Marriage isn't easy. But it is fun. But only if you make it fun. So.... laugh a little. Actually laugh a lot. Learn together. And do the dishes.

Well, marriage is the best thing that has happened to me. I fully endorse it. For amateur advice from two of the best amateurs around, feel free to review the previous twenty points/suggestions.

Sincerely,
Skinny

The 10 Things You Don't Hear About Marriage || Her Side

10.17.2012

There are things no one will ever EVER tell you about getting married. They will tell you marriage is tough. They will tell you marriage is work. But they will never tell you the specifics. Well. I am here today to tell you a few of the specifics. Because after a few months of marriage and a few dozen marriage mistakes... Adam and I are learning. And what are we learning? We are learning that marriage is everything we would have hoped for plus a few surprises along the way. Here are the ten things (so far) that I sort of knew but  didn't know at all about getting married.

  1. You will have to buy twice... if not three times as many groceries. I used to be able to buy one loaf of bread and a gallon of milk for a month and it would usually go bad before I could use it all. Now I have to buy SIX loaves of bread in a month... and x, y, and z of everything else!
  2. Credit cards are exciting. And dangerous. A budget has never been more important than at this very moment.
  3. You can no longer watch your "shows" like... Gossip Girl, The Bachelorette, or Glee without the following comments, "This show is so predictable," or "This show is so inappropriate!" or "This show is so unrealistic." among many other things you have said to yourself but have ignored because they are your shows!
  4. Boys are a lot more particular about your clothes than you would think... "You cant hang that, the neck will get stretched out." ... "Those are darks, not lights!" ... "I don't fold that."
  5. Not only are they particular about their clothes... but keep in mind, the laundry doubles. Which means laundry must be done more. And sometimes it means more sorting. And sometimes it means being careful when you wash clothes so you don't turn something white pink. Sorry Adam. I didn't realize those red pants would still be releasing dye when I washed them.
  6. If someone says they will clean up later... they might. But they also might not. Which means you either have to pester them until it gets done or you have to do it yourself.
  7. There are different methods to cleaning. Sometimes someone hides treats in the oven. Which leads me to my next point...
  8. Always check the over before turning it on.
  9. You will always feel guilty about wanting to buy new clothes. Before I was married I was like, "Hey... I worked hard this week. I deserve new shirt." Now I have to confess to Adam I even THOUGHT about buying new clothes... because it is now our budget.
  10. Being in love and learning together has never been so exciting. And even though there is so much to learn and experience, and even more to stress about... someone is always there through every moment. And doesn't that make it better?
Love,
Deidre

P.S. Don't forget to check out Adam's response.... what does he think this is?! A presidential debate!?

Dear Minions,

10.16.2012

Three weeks ago I watched a movie that I should have seen a long time ago. It was Despicable Me. I don't know why I had never seen it but it is now a movie that I am now willing to watch at least once a week. Why would I want to watch it once a week? Well, because it has these little characters called minions. They seem to be made of the same material that rubber duckies are made of and shaped like the little gifts that come in the middle of a Kinder Egg. Even though these little balls of energy don't actually ever say a real word in the english language, they will make you smile no matter how bad your day is. For example... remember how you had to wake up at 7:00 AM this morning to go to either work or school. Got it? Ok good. Now, watch the following video.

Did you notice a difference? If you didn't, go ahead and watch it again. Well, thanks to Deidre and minions, I never have bad days. Feel free to pass on the "cheerer upper" to a coworker or fellow student who looks like they aren't enjoying themselves.

Sincerely,
Skinny

Dear Fall,

10.15.2012

It is FINALLY feeling like fall. I have had to put on sweats at night and boots in the morning. And I have even regretted not grabbing a jacket a time or two. So it must be fall, for reals. Adam and I decided to make a fall checklist of all the things we wanted to accomplish as the weather cools off. Here is our list.

Does anyone else get super excited for Halloween? I love dressing up. And haunted houses.
What fall traditions are you looking forward to?
What things do you have planned for fall?

Dear Grub Tour | The Awful Waffle,

10.13.2012

Awful Waffle
602 East 600 North
Provo UT

Last week was the Awful Waffle blogger meet up. And let me tell you. The Awful Waffle is GOOD. There was about 15 bloggers there and we all ordered different things so we could share and taste test.

I tried a little of everything. Here is a list of the things I had a bite of, that way you can get an idea of the variety.

Cinnamon waffle with strawberries, cream cheese icing, and cinnamon sugar on top
Barbecue chicken pizza
Crepe filled with nutella topped with strawberries, bananas, and whipped cream
French fries with their three speciality dipping sauces
Liege waffle with speculoos and strawberries
Spicy sausage egg and cheese crepe
Crepe with pumpkin pie filling, graham cracker, cream cheese icing, whipped cream

I know what you are thinking... this girl ate a ton... what the heck? I just want to remind you, with a bunch of girls ordering, we all shared. That is how I was lucky enough to try it all! Let me tell you my favorite things about this place:
  1. Delicious waffles and crepes with any of the toppings you want. Seriously so much variety.
  2. Savory crepes too. You want a crepe but not a treat, they have you covered.
  3. The light fixtures are bomb. Some made out of bird cages, some out of mason jars, and some with exposed copper. The light fixtures was enough all on it's own to make me happy.
  4. Two words. Chalkboards everywhere.
  5. They are more than waffles because there is a pizzeria with it now. I got one to go. And they write little messages in the lid of every to go box.
Besides all of those things, it is just a fun environment and a good price. The only downside to Awful Waffle is parking. It is in the middle of a complex,so you either have to park a little further away or luck into a spot close. There is also a church parking lot across the street, it says it boots... but I parked there and was fine. Just a side note in case you need to be there at a specific time. Plan for parking. I would seriously recommend stopping in. Here are some photos of the environment at The Awful Waffle.
Ceramic deer head on the wall? Don't mind if I do.

The one thing that someone remembered to take a photo of before DIGGING in.

Most of the bloggers that were there that night.

Okay. So... you see what I mean? First of all. The food is GREAT and very reasonably priced. The atmosphere is fun and modern (maybe a little hipster trendy?). There is always room to draw on the table or the wall. And there is a lot of seating so you don't have to worry about searching for a seat. I pinky promise you will love Awful Waffle.

Love,
Deidre

Celebrate in everyone's weekend plans!

Last weekend was my birthday. Adam played baseball. I watched (in my new Miller jersey) and wore a crown and huge buttons thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Dennis.

This weekend it going to be AWESOME. Our plans are as follows...
  • First of all. It is BYU Homecoming. BYU vs Oregon football game. Wish us look with both of our QBs being injured. I have faith that something will work out.
  • Adam also has a test, so that will give me plenty of time to relax and watch GG.
  • We have been toying with the idea of a haunted house, Castle of Chaos is RIGHT down the street... but we might save that for closer to the Halloween holiday.
  • Figure out our Halloween costumes. We have a few ideas. But we need to finalize it this weekend before all the parties start. I love Halloween.
  • We will most likely spend a portion of the weekend with Madison and Drew because... we are always with them.
  • Fall photo shoot? Adam doesn't know I want to do that yet.
  • Adam feels bad that I spent my birthday watching baseball and then not seeing him while he attended Priesthood session of conference, so we are re-celebrating my birthday. He said he has lots of "birthday surprises" planned. In other words, he doesn't know what we are doing yet so he is pretending he has awesome things. But yes. A re-birthday. Which means another yummy dinner. Any ideas where we should go?

Dear Candy Corn,

10.11.2012

Dress: Fred Meyer | Scarf: Soel Boutique | Tights: Target | Boots: TJMaxx

Besides all of my favorite fall accessories shown above {tights, boots, and scarves} I have forgotten to mention one more fall item... time and time again. CANDY CORN. It is candy corn season.
